In March, I have the opportunity to speak with aspiring educational administrators at a couple of conferences sponsored by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals (GASSP). The difficulty in the presentation lies in that I am limited to 45 minutes to share my perspective. As a former middle school and current high school principal, I have a strong desire to share the lows and potholes of school leadership, but I've chosen to describe the secret to school improvement. The secret cannot be found in some expensive program or technology upgrade. School culture is the secret. Strong educational administrators understand the importance of providing students with an engaging education. Failure of school leaders to develop a positive strong culture diminishes the effect of school improvement measures.
If the secret is a positive school culture, then why isn't every public school leader working each day to develop a positive school culture? I believe every school leader should be working to develop a positive school culture each and every day. The complexity of school culture and improvement complicates the process.
